Workplace Mediation

"Mediation is a powerful form of dispute resolution for many workplace issues"

What is Mediation?

Mediation is an informal procedure in which an impartial mediator assists disputants to resolve their differences in a collaborative way and reach solutions in which the mediator has no stake.

Why Mediation?

People in dispute often wish to resolve problems informally and mediation is a viable alternative to a formal grievance procedure, offering a flexible approach and practical, rather than imposed, solutions. Mediation provides an early opportunity for the people concerned to communicate with each other in a safe and confidential environment, identifying mutual agreements and restoring respectful, professional working relationships.

How does Mediation Work?

Mediation involves separate meetings with each party, followed by joint meetings. The outcome is an agreement between parties, which may be formalised. Organisations can use internal/external mediators. The most important consideration is the quality and competence of the mediator

The Benefits of Mediation in the Workplace

A number of factors make mediation one of the most favoured dispute resolution methods for addressing workplace conflicts:

  • Mediation is less costly, not just in financial terms, but also in management time, employee stress and the effects of an unproductive working environment
  • The process provides an early opportunity to deal with conflict
  • The process is shorter than more formal grievance processes, ensuring a prompt return to productive work
  • Mediation can improve communication and the rebuilding of working relationships
  • Mediation is voluntary and does not prejudice the right of individuals to access other procedures if problems remain
  • Mediation may avoid valuable employees leaving and having to be replaced
